Coffee may lower risk of Uterus cancer

1 tickles / ticked

According to a new study in Japan, women who drink a lot of coffee may have lower risks of having Uterus cancer.

The study had around 54,000 women aged 40 to 69 were monitored by Japan's health ministry. According to the medical team, it took over 15 years and in this time 117 women developed cancer in the womb. These women were divided into four groups, which determined the amount of coffee they drank.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control, uterine cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women.

More great news about coffee here and why we should drink it everyday or for those who are not really into it maybe at least 3x a week. But of course for those who are having palpitations, just take it in moderation. Anyway, as long as you can take it go ahead and drink it.

Drinking Coffee Or Tea Helps Cuts Smokers' Risk of Getting Stroke

1 tickles / ticked

Scared that you might get stroke because of smoking too much? Even if you don't care that much we still have good news for you. A Finnish study suggests that drinking two or more cups of tea or coffee a day can reduce male smokers' stroke risk.

The study took 13 years and over 26,000 male smokers where it was known that those who regularly drank tea and coffee were 21 per cent less likely to suffer a type of stroke known as a cerebral infarction but other forms of stroke did not seem to have been affected by coffee or tea intake.

Cerebral infarction is the blockage of the flow of blood to the cerebrum, causing or resulting in brain tissue death.

This is another one of the reasons to drink coffee and/or tea, whether you're a smoker or not. Tea of course, as we know, has lots of antioxidants that help the body fight cancer. Knowing this, maybe smokers can now try to limit their sticks or packs of cigarettes a day to make the effect of coffee and tea to the body better.

Let's all drink coffee to that...

The Problem of Drinking Too Much Coffee

0 tickles / ticked

Caffeine as we know is addicting. All coffee drinkers know this since we it is just hard to stop right? Well, this is not really a problem since drinking coffee has a lot of health benefits. The problem is if we start getting used to putting lots of sugar and cream when we make our own coffee or when we buy lots of cold coffee drinks, frozen/iced coffee drinks that Starbucks made popular.

Coffee used to be just well..plain coffee. Brewed coffee with just a pack or two of sugar and some creamer and that's it but what Starbucks and the other coffee chains did was to add drinks that are sweet that shouldn't really be considered as coffee. It's more like a dessert with coffee as its main ingredient or should I say sugar as its main ingredient. We often forget that these drinks have higher calories but do we really know how high it is? Or do we even know that they have lots of hidden calories?

So to help everyone especially those who are dieting but just can't get enough of coffee, here is a short list of some of the coffee drink calorie count of places people go to:

Starbucks
Dunkin Donuts
Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
Caribou Coffee
Krispy Kreme
Peet's Coffee
McDonald's
Coffee Calorie Counter

Just remember that coffee may have some hidden calories in it but what we really have to remember that coffee usually goes with doughnuts, scones, muffins, banana bread, cupcakes and so on. This is what really adds the additional weight to everyone. So if you're having coffee as a "dessert" take it easy with the doughnuts.. it will not only save us money but will also save lots of effort burning it and worrying about the extra weight we will be gaining.

Once we keep these things in mind, drinking coffee isn't a problem anymore but a solution of a better day. So keep on drinking coffee and have a great day everybody.

Four Memory Boosting Foods

0 tickles / ticked

What's a great way to help fight memory loss and even improve our memory? One is sleeping right but according to research another would be eating right. According to Joy Bauer MS, a TODAY nutritionist,

"Every cell in your body needs a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients in order to stay alive and work properly, including brain cells. Because oxygen and nutrients are carried in the blood stream, anything that impedes blood flow will starve those all-important brain cells."

SO..what are those foods that can help boost our memory? Let's start with our favorite drink:

Coffee

Good news for coffee lovers. About two years ago, researchers from the University Innsbruck in Austria found caffeinated coffee can temporarily sharpen your focus and memory. After giving volunteers the caffeine equivalent of about two cups of coffee, they observed that their brain activity was increased in two locations—one being the part responsible for memory. Results were observed using MRI technology. Without caffeine, there was no increase in brain activity.

Then, earlier this year, another study published in a leading Neurology journal, found the effects of coffee may be longer lasting — specifically in women. This four-year long study involving about 7000 participants... all participants went through thorough baseline evaluations – cognitive function was tested, along with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other vascular issues. Participants were re-evaluated at the two-year mark, and again at the four year mark.

At the end of the four year period, researchers found that women age 65 and older who drank more than three cups of coffee per day (or the caffeine equivalent in tea) had 33 percent less decline in memory over time than women who drank one cup or less of coffee or tea per day. The results held up even after researchers adjusted for other factors that could affect memory abilities, such as age, education, baseline cognitive function, depression, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, medications, and other chronic illnesses. This caffeine-memory association was not observed in men — the authors hypothesize that perhaps that’s because men and women metabolize caffeine differently.

So if memory problems are a major concern for you, and if you don’t have a medical condition that precludes caffeine, feel free to indulge in a cup or two in the morning to jump-start your brain.

Note: If you have elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, you should limit your caffeine fix to plain brewed coffee or tea. There is some evidence that unfiltered coffee (the kind used to make espresso, cappuccino, and latte) may raise cholesterol levels, especially in people who are already battling high cholesterol. To be safe, skip the fancy brews and stick with a regular cup of joe. Of course, be cautious and moderate with added sugar! [Read the full Article]

Are you a Coffee Addict?

0 tickles / ticked

That is the question...Are you a coffee addict?

If yes, this is really an informative video on coffee for you to watch and of course also for non-coffee addicts too. It answers a lot of questions if you're drinking too much and if drinking coffee is safe even if you're pregnant. It evens shows a segment on what is the effect of caffeine to your system once you drink your cup of joe.

Speaking of drinking too much, I also can't believe how that guy in the video drinks 7-8 shots of espresso daily. My heart would be pumping at an alarming rate if I drank that much. I'd be awake all night and for a guy that panics fast, I'm not sure how I'll be able to handle the anxiety attacks. How about you? Are you also that kind of a coffee addict?

*Apologies if the size of the video for some may be too big, something's wrong with the MSNBC video.

Drinking Coffee After Workout Can Refuel Muscle

Here's another reason to drink coffee especially for those who are active and workout a lot. Add Coffee to your post workout diet and eat carbs! Isn't that weird? I must admit that even as a coffee lover, I'd rather go for something cold like a Gatorade after workout to refuel my body and something like coffee rarely crosses my mind to do that. My heartbeat would still be fast after a workout and I wouldn't want to make it work faster by drinking more caffeine. But this research is convincing and I just might have changed my mind about drinking coffee after a workout. This is taken from the Science Daily:

Glycogen, the muscle's primary fuel source during exercise, is replenished more rapidly when athletes ingest both carbohydrate and caffeine following exhaustive exercise, new research shows. Athletes who ingested caffeine with carbohydrate had 66% more glycogen in their muscles four hours after finishing intense, glycogen-depleting exercise, compared to when they consumed carbohydrate alone, according to the study

"If you have 66% more fuel for the next day's training or competition, there is absolutely no question you will go farther or faster," said Dr. Hawley, the study's senior author. Caffeine is present in common foods and beverages, including coffee, tea, chocolate and cola drinks.

I am now convinced that coffee and yes, chocolate can be part of our diet after a tiring workout. Being a chubby guy, I can't outrun some of the guys who I play basketball with and this research is something I can look forward to in helping me increase my speed (Hopefully even if I've accepted that I was born slow). I will update you the whenever this becomes part of my "workout" all right? Let's see if it works even if it is just works psychologically. Tell me also if this research works for you too. Have a great day everyone!

Too Much Coffee Can Lead to Miscarriage

0 tickles / ticked

I know this topic made headlines early this year but the reason I blogged about it because some women may not have read or heard about the news. Especially with some new soon to be mothers and of course with the recent "teen pregnancy pact"we would want them to have a healthy baby. Of course, Coffee Tickle wants everyone to have a great day and ultimately have a great life so here it is - something to protect pregnant women and I hope that extra knowledge can help.

According to study by The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, "pregnant women who consume 200 milligrams or more of caffeine a day — the amount in 10 ounces of coffee or 25 ounces of tea — may double their risk of miscarriage." A 12-ounce tall Starbucks Coffee is around 260 mg so it's better to stay away from this just to be safe.

Pregnant women should try to give up caffeine for at least the first three or four months, said the lead author of the study, Dr. De-Kun Li, a reproductive and perinatal epidemiologist at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, California.

Yes, it may be hard for coffee drinkers to stop drinking abruptly and it may cause coffee headaches and I can understand this. This has been part of your daily routine and just like any other drug, it would be hard to give up coffee. But to be on the safe side, pregnant women just have to be extra disciplined and just look forward to the day your baby is born and the day you drink coffee again.

Just an advise: Coffee, of course, is really addicting and if pregnant women can't give up coffee maybe they could just cut their intake in half or just take decaf coffee. Hope this somehow helps pregnant women. You can do it!

Sipping or Sniffing Coffee is just the same!

0 tickles / ticked

Non coffee drinkers, rejoice! If you are not yet into coffee but would like to experience the benefits of coffee, sniffing it might just do the trick. This is according to a group of scientists from China who said that sipping coffee and sipping it is the same "by altering the activity of some genes in the brain, reducing the effects of sleep deprivation.

According to the research from China, " Scientists have conducted numerous studies that investigate both the beneficial and adverse effects that coffee can have on health, from the antioxidants it possesses to the possible detriments of too much caffeine."

This is really great news especially if you are experiencing palpitations when drinking too much coffee. This can reduce the your intake of coffee and may just have the same effect. Admittedly, there are times when I still want to take coffee but would be scared of palpitations. This might be the cure for this, I just have to sniff the coffee and not force myself to that extra cup. I hope it works but I am sure I will have a hard time being a coffee adict.

For coffee addict who just have to drink their coffee in every break they have you may just ignore this post (joke!). Drink to your heart's content! Love coffee! Sniff if you have to and Coffee Tickle to a great Day everyone!

Health Benefits: The more coffee you drink the better

0 tickles / ticked

Coffee just got better and I am loving it. Not only does it taste good but it is also good to your health. A research done by Harvard said that it could lessen the risk of diabetes, colon cancer and Parkinson's disease. I have heard of it a couple of times before but since I was never really into coffee and wasn't too concerned with health I just completely ignored it. Of course I wanted better health, but being young I didn't quite care about it. I was just trying to enjoy life in a different state of mind (the no direction one).

Now, I know I can enjoy life with direction and enjoy life with cups of coffee. Other benefits of coffee are in helping fight against cavities, preventing asthma when no medicine is around, stopping a headache, and even boosting your mood.

Being an asthmatic, this sure is great news for me. I have always had asthma ever since I was a kid and lack of sleep and just a low immune system trigger this. Now that I know that coffee can prevent asthma attacks I will have another reason to drink coffee even if I am sick :) Of course it can't substitute my "asthma puffs" but I will try it the next time it attacks. Not that I want to get asthma, I will just be doing this for the sake of experiment and the love of coffee I will do it (with my asthma puffs at my side just in case).

Although further research is being done, it is good to know that coffee helps fight cavities. But we should be cautious and not use this as an excuse to drink coffee. Since a lot of us choose to put sugar in our coffee, we would still have to protect it by of course, brushing our teeth. Another thing is that we wouldn't want to have a coffee smile or coffee stains in our teeth. To remove coffee stains here are some great tips

Knowing that coffee can lessen the risk for diabetes, colon cancer and Parkinson's disease we should be thinking of maybe increasing our daily coffee intake. But not too much if you know your body can't handle it ok? Hope you had a great weekend everyone!
